Professional video editors don’t work under the same roof. They now work everywhere


Broadcasters and production houses employ journalists, reporters, and craft editors, located in multiple sites. They also use outsourced services around the world. On top of that, broadcasters now collect User Generated Content (UGC) as people with smartphones can capture live events and upload them for consideration by newscasters.

RayShaper is researching two areas of paramount importance to content creators and distributors: compression and transcoding.

First, video editors need transparent compression. It’s not practical to send original, uncompressed videos back and forth to different sites hundreds of times. The content would experience “generation loss” due to network errors every time it’s sent out. Plus, editing must support independent access to every frame such that inter-frame compression in video codecs is not an option.

Second, with the plethora of viewing devices, content must be delivered in many different formats. This is called transcoding. To stream content to every kind of subscriber, Netflix transcodes movies to some 120 formats. Distributors of live events need to combine transcoding with realtime quality metrics to ensure everybody gets good content.

We believe that the cloud is the right platform for collaborative content editing. Already, Amazon and Microsoft clouds allow people to upload videos and edit them online. Studio-quality content management is moving towards hybrid solutions that consist of both on-premise as well as the cloud.
